HISTORIC APOLOGYAnother Step on the Journey of Reconciliation Last Friday, the Pope met with nearly 200 First Nations, Inuit and Metis delegates at the Vatican and delivered a long-sought apology for actions of church leaders in perpetuating abuse of Indigenous children at Catholic residential schools. “All these things are contrary to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For the deplorable conduct of those members of the Catholic Church, I ask for God's forgiveness, and I want to say to you with all my heart: I am very sorry. And I join my brothers, the Canadian bishops, in asking your pardon." Deacon Rev. Rennie Nahanee from the Squamish St. Paul's Church who preached at Gloria Dei in 2021 told the North Shore News the Papal apology made him feel "elated" and makes his job of reconciliation between the church and Indigenous people a lot easier. For many Indigenous people, including Deacon Rennie, it is important that the Pope come to Canada to meet with Indigenous people face-to-face. It is in that kind of embodied connection where "energy can be exchanged" and the truthfulness and sincerity of a person's words can be gauged--whether an apology is heartfelt and not just words read from a paper. Deacon Rennie also hopes that the Pope's visit and apology on Canadian soil would help people realize that "there must be some truth to all the stories and history that we've been hearing about," and that this knowledge would spur people "to learn more about our history." |
