Yesterday I forwarded an email from Shannon Muir giving an update on the family that we were asked to assist with last month.  I assumed that everyone would remember this family, but just in case you forgot: they were old friends of Honada’s who were living under a staircase.  “This lady, her husband, and 5 of their six children used to own a butcher shop. They had to leave Damascus, then were evacuated from another city in Syria, Idlib I believe. According to Honada, they were taken to the border and left there. Turkey will not allow them to enter unless they pay 300$US per person. (Their oldest daughter has gotten in to Turkey and waits for them there.) The family is currently living under a stairway. They have been there for 6 months. “  We successfully raised the money that was needed and yesterday’s email was an update on the family.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Climate Action Month Day 9: Indigenous Rights week

INDIGENOUS RIGHTS

Indigenous rights are central to Climate Action Month because Indigenous people have long been at the forefront of the environmental movement in Canada and around the world. Indigenous identities are often based on relationships to the land, and Indigenous peoples are disproportionately facing the consequences of climate inaction.

Today’s resource: These thoughts are reflected in today’s resource written by Eriel Tchekwie Deranger. “Last night as I drifted to sleep… my heart hurt — I had nightmares and tossed and turned wondering how we got here. Not just in Alberta, but in the US, in Brazil, and all over the world – fascism and hate is on the rise. The sacrifice for ‘their’ rise will be the people on the frontlines fighting to protect the natural world, and all life will suffer if we don’t stand up.”
